Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because of the great teachers I had growing up. My 5th grade teacher, Mr. Milton, made me see in myself the person I could be. Because of him, I felt like I could do anything. Knowing I could do that for kids today made the choice easy. Additionally, it doesn't hurt to mention that my dad was a naval instructor, my grandmother was an art teacher, and my great grandparents were college professors. To teach is a choice, but it helps to have the inspiration so close to home.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable experience is one I share with my students every year. One morning I was standing outside my classroom when a student came rushing around the corner. Out of breath, he said 'There's a bear at school!" I laughed and said 'I know some dogs can be very large. Don't worry, they will let us know if there is real danger." Then, the announcement came . There was an actual black bear on the playground! I tell this story to admit how adults can be wrong and how I learned to listen.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Winning the money would be incredible! I would definitely put some aside for college for my kids. But if I could be selfish, I would buy or maybe put a down payment on a new car. My current vehicle is approaching a decade in use. I appreciate what I have and I love my mini van, but it has some history. One door won't open, there is a dent in the back from learning to ride a bike-incident, one wheel wobbles from a hidden pothole. I would love a new vehicle to make new stories.
