Tell us why you became a teacher

A high school after school job at the YMCA with kids revealed my calling! From there I taught swim lessons where I witnessed a child experience the joy of learning! I knew I needed to provide that joy to children every day! I needed to experience that joy as well. Being a teacher is powerful! I get to start the first part of the ripple effect that many others join to shape lives. I became a teacher because I believe with all of my heart it is the greatest calling and act of service we can do!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In a third grade classroom a young boy was having headaches every day. Something was wrong and I was a brand new young teacher. This boy had a brain tumor and ended up spending weeks in the hospital. I watched his peers write cards, draw pictures and love him. I visited him in the hospital and watched the joy he showed when I walked in the door. He told the nurses, “this is my teacher!” Watching a 9 year old boy fight for his life and keep his joy taught me so much as a new teacher.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My profession is hurting right now! There is more on my colleagues plate than ever before. Our kids are being loved and educated every day. I would use the money to pour into the staff at my school. I would set up lunch food trucks, catered lunches, self care packages, fill classroom supplies wish lists and hotel stays for weekends away to reset and recharge. Filling their buckets so they can keep pouring into their students!
