Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to help students really connect to and engage with the science of Biology. It is only of the only sciences taught that is relatable to my students because so much of what is taught is actually happening in their bodies. I love being able to use real life examples of bodily processes my students experience everyday in my lessons. I always promised myself that as a teacher I would make learning fun and meaningful for my students and that is what I will continue to do!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One year, I had a student who just did not like science. His experience with science was never positive or engaging and he was never into learning it. I made it my mission to change his mind that year. I modified lessons to meet his individual need and really focused on making the science fun, relatable and meaningful. By the end of the school year, that same student was one of my top students and speaking about how he wanted to continue taking Biology and strive for AP!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to continue my education and pursue additional CTLE classes and courses on how I can improve my teaching and best strategies in the classroom to meet my students needs. I would also use the money to purchase additional science materials that my district lacks. I teach in an economically disadvantaged school district that could use extra funds. This would help keep my students engaged with the science learning going on in the classroom!
