Tell us why you became a teacher

In high school, my greatest assets were a sharp mind and a strong work ethic. I focused on my studies, worked hard and excelled in my studies. When I became a teacher, I always remembered those feelings of being a student who was under everyone’s radar. As a teacher, how could I create opportunities for those students? How could I help them gain confidence? Get recognized? Become a part of the school community? Extracurricular activities seemed like the best place to start.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I revived our school’s Academic Decathlon Team and recruited students. I found students who were avid readers, students who loved World War II, C students and A+ students. I took chances on kids who never had someone take a chance on them. Students who had great knowledge but didn’t know where to apply it were able to earn medals, trophies and build confidence. Our Academic Decathlon team quickly rose to one of the top in the state and I'll never forget the day we were named State Champions!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I value education and hope to instill that in my daughters. Some of the money would be set aside for their future education. I would also put a down payment on a new car as mine is on its last legs. Finally, I would use some of the funds to improve my classroom so that it is a safe and fun environment where students want to come and learn. Ooh and legos!
