Tell us why you became a teacher

When I was 17, I became a camp counselor. I loved the job and continued working every summer. It was working as a camp counselor that caused me to developed a passion for working with kids. In college I took some education classes and had the opportunity to student teach. Student teaching allowed me to continue working with kids, but also get a glimpse into the world of education. Watching the students develop as learners and as people confirmed for me that I had made the right choice.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

It is difficult to pick out one single moment. Every time a student has an "aha" moment or seeing how much they have grown at the end of the year is always memorable. I think the moment that sticks out the most was at the end of my first year teaching in New Orleans. I told my students that I was moving to Chicago and they were all very upset and didn't want me to go. It was very touching to see how much of an impact I had on their lives, even as a first year teacher with a lot to learn.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I will use some of the money to get my Masters of Education. As a young teacher, I still have a lot to learn. I can't wait to further my education so I can be the best teacher possible for my students. With the rest of the money, I will fund extracurriculars. I will expand the soccer program that I started, allow other teachers to start their own programs, and bring exciting guests to the school.
