Learn MoreI became a teacher because someone saw qualities in me that would thrive in education. My dream was basketball and playing pro was in my sights, but a life-changing car accident shifted my path. Teaching showed me I wanted to be what I lacked—a Black male teacher. One who valued identity, representation, and believed in my potential beyond society’s limits. I strive to inspire students to succeed far beyond stereotypes. Teaching became my purpose, and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy most memorable teaching experience was with a 9th-grade ELA student who was transferring to another school. At the end of the year, she wrote me a heartfelt letter thanking me not only for what she learned in ELA but also for helping her grow as a person. That letter reminded me that education extends far beyond the classroom and that as teachers, our impact often goes unseen. It reaffirmed my purpose as an educator—something I never imagined becoming, yet now deeply value.
What would you do with the $25,000?I’d use the $25,000 to grow The I Will Foundation, the nonprofit I started in 2019 after my car accident. The goal has always been to better support youth in the city by giving them access to materials, resources, and opportunities I never had growing up. This money would help expand what we do—mentorship programs, resources, and creating real chances for kids to see what’s possible for their future. It’s all about giving back and making sure they have what they need to succeed.
