Tell us why you became a teacher

To be honest, nothing else ever interested me. As I went though the teaching program and had more and more exposure to the students, I soon discovered how exhilarating it is to see that lightbulb go off when I student understands a concept, or takes that burning question a step further to explore and find answers! It’s truly rewarding.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I’ve taught most of my career in low socioeconomic schools. Unfortunately, the students I have the honor of teaching come from unstable homes. One particular student I had in fourth grade was in a foster home. He was angry and gave me a run for my money some days with pushing back, but I took the time to get to know him and ended up finding out exactly what was causing particular behavior issues. Once he saw that I cared for him as a person, he thrived! I was so proud!

What would you do with the $25,000?

Spend it on my classroom and my students of course! I take pride in my classroom and do my best to create a warm and inviting environment where students feel welcomed and want to learn. I would also, have items such as shirts, pants, shoes, extra socks for my students. Unfortunately, they don’t always have what they need at home. I want to be able to take care of them here. No child should ever feel embarrassed because they are wearing clothes that are torn or dirty.
