Quarter-Finalist

Heather Hunter

Why I love teaching is an easy question to answer; seeing a student’s eyes light up when realize they did it or they understand, is MAGIC.

Tell us why you became a teacher

When I first entered college I thought I wanted to be an engineer. That lasted for about two weeks. I realized that I wanted to do something else. I used to help out in the Special Needs room in high school. I began to connect helping others to a valuable investment in my own development as a human. I decided to become a teacher and follow a path that has brought me more satisfaction than I could have ever fathomed.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

This year I moved to a much smaller school district. I previously taught in a very large well known school district and school. This year I am teaching 5th grade, all subjects. I believe that this position is going to be the one that makes me a different human and pushes me to become a better me. Understanding that I am needed and making a difference is what makes being a teacher the reason I navigate this life the way I do. I am a teacher.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I constantly buy supplies for my classroom out of my own pocket. Not just pencils, but anything that will help my students have the most authentic experience in my classroom as possible. Every student in my class needed supplies for their individual science projects, I didn’t blink an eye. There is only one triple beam balance for us to share; I bought two more. Kids need to experience hands on learning. We must build future generations that will make our world a brighter place.
