Tell us why you became a teacher

Honestly, I didn't know I wanted to be a teacher until I was in high school participating in an internship program with a local middle school. I was able to work with the students where I learned to teach them fun and exciting skills! I've worked with every age group Kindergarten through 12th grade and while each grade level carries its own challenges and characteristics, I'm always finding that there are rewarding pieces to every bit of the journey. I've found my life's purpose in education!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

The most memorable experiences haven't been with students in learning the content of a lesson, but when I've been able to build meaningful connections with students as people with real needs, lives, and dreams. I want every single student that walks through my classroom to feel as if they always have someone in their corner who cares for them and their wellbeing. When students feel comfortable as their authentic selves with an excitement for learning in my classroom, I find my purpose fulfilled.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I teach Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS). With $25,000 , I would love to revamp our FCS curriculum and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) program so that our students can have the resources to make a larger impact in our school and community. Some examples: replacing broken infant simulators, bringing in a professional chef for an in-class learning experience, and sending our students to conventions where they can network and learn from the top leaders in the FCS field.
