Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in young people like my teachers did for me. Born and raised in East Los Ángeles I wanted to serve as a role model for students from my community. Growing up, I didn't have too many teachers I could relate to and I wanted that for my community. I'm happy to share that in my 30 year career I have influenced many to believe in themselves and to attend college and earn degrees and to always remember to come and give back.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was when my Mariachi students were invited to open up a concert for Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, which is renowned as the world's best Mariachi. After our performance, the promoter invited us for a second night and asked us to perform for an hour. We have been invited back every year since. This has motivated my students to practice and perform at a high level. Many have continued to perform at the collegiate level.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would invest the money in my students and the mariachi program so that they can attend mariachi workshops and buy new quality instruments and uniforms for all. As a self-funded group we rely on donations to maintain our program. I would also like to use the funds to create a Mariachi Conference to serve low-income students from Los Angeles so that they can have access to high level instruction from industry professionals. Lastly, I would take a vacation after I retire in 3 years.
