Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because in my heart all students should be treated fairly and without bias. I have a passion for learning that I try to instill in my students. My experience in high school was not a good one and I swore I would do better, I had great teachers and ones I could not stand. So I channel those that were inspirational and follow in their footprints building on their legacy.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I was at a parts store and a man walked up to me and asked if it was me. He told me to wait here and then brought his wife over. He then told her it was because of Mr. Griffin that he was able to provide for her because he believed in me and told me I was capable and worthy to go to college and succeed. He was the only person who believed in me, my family did not and told me every day I was worthless. Because of his belief in me, I made something great! He made me a winner!

What would you do with the $25,000?

Honestly I would use part of it to pay bills off, however I would also use a good amount to pick up stuff for my classroom to finish off my cooking lab. I have already spent several thousand on getting it where it is now. My students love being able to learn about food, its chemistry and actually preparing food. Since I am not vo-tech the state does not pay for anything so I have found grants and used my own money to make this lab work. But it is not yet complete, I still need more equipment.
