I had a rough home life as a teen. My teachers made me feel seen and heard. I turned out the way I did because of their kindness and support. Being a teen is hard. I wanted to do for others what my teachers did for me. Help them know they aren't alone or crazy and that they will be OK.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceThere isn't one experience that stands out, but a series of events. I held my students to a high standard because I believed in them. This group then went on to succeed in high school and thrive in college. Hearing from them how my class played an integral part of their success is why I do what I do. Those notes are more precious than gold.
What would you do with the $25,000?Use it to attract investors to help create a literacy program for impoverished families in the greater Cleveland area. Reading is knowledge and knowledge is power. I want to empower urban students to have the tools to succeed.
