Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because my biggest passion in school myself was literature. I also loved working with kids and had been a camp counsellor for many years and I worked at a daycare. I decided to become a teacher to bring 2 of my favourite things together. I wanted to make students as passionate about literature as I was and really help them be as excited about reading.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I read my Grade 1/2 class Peter Pan because it is my all time favourite story. I also read them Peter and the Starcatchers, a prequel to the story. From the books we did a huge exploration on Pirate Ships. I bought 2 old antique “treasure chests” where we kept pirate things like spy glasses, eye patches, hats and all of our pirate books. We also made a huge wooden pirate ship that the kids could play on. We added many details to our ship like a wheel that actually turned and wooden planks.

What would you do with the $25,000?

The first thing I would do with $25,000 dollars is take my husband and 3 kids on a big family vacation. We haven’t really been on a big family trip because my husband is a teacher too. During summer and winter break when we can actually travel tickets and hotels are too expensive. I would also maybe pay off some of our debt or do some much needed upgrading to our home.
