Emma Smith

I love teaching because I get to keep my childlike sense of wonder. I see the world through my student’s eyes. I’m always learning & playing

Tell us why you became a teacher

I never wanted to be a teacher. My mom was a teacher & I saw how hard it was. I wanted to be a zookeeper. I got a BA in Communications. When I had my children I stayed home & was very involved in their schools. I substituted, then became a teacher assistant. I loved the kids & went back to school to become a teacher. I was a military wife working all day as a TA, raising two kids, & going to school at night. With the support of many amazing teachers I earned my masters in elementary education.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Creating the first elementary STEM specials in our county is my most memorable teaching experience. I'd taught in 3rd & 5th grade through play & engineering design but wanted it for all our students. I created the program from nothing. I presented the idea to my principal, attended workshops, & visited schools. I wrote many grants while convincing our district to fund the position. After 3 years of hard work I am now full time. Now I get to see students grow each year in their creative learning.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were awarded the $25,000 I would use it to help my family. I would love to be able to pay down my house payment or purchase a vehicle. Currently there are 4 adults in our household. My adult son & daughter both work as teachers & live at home due to their not being able to afford to live on their own. My husband is nearing retirement and the money would help us to prepare for that. Our family would use the financial gain to improve our near future.
