I love watching my students grow and become the people they were meant to be. To have any part in that is such an honor.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I’ve known I wanted to teach since I was 11. Originally I wanted to teach English, but then I had the most incredible Spanish teacher in high school. She took me under her wing, nurtured my passion for the language, and inspired me to become a Spanish teacher. From there on, it became my goal to become a teacher who inspires students like she did.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a student who I met in 7th grade and taught till she was in high school. She was incredibly shy and refused to participate in class. As the years went on, we formed a rapport where she began to trust me and open up. She ended up continuing with Spanish to the advanced level and excelled. I remember the first time she was brave enough to read a passage aloud in Spanish. The pride in her eyes when she finished was incredible. Her growth over the years is why I do what I do.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use it on my classroom. I have a never-ending list of school supplies and other items that I have wanted for my students. From flexible seating options to a class set of chromebooks - I could finally create my dream classroom that could truly meet the needs of all of my students.
