I see teaching as a privilege. I thrive by getting kids excited to take risks while having fun learning. Seeing kids succeed is priceless.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I came to elementary music teaching after working as a voice instructor and musical theater director. I wanted to create opportunities for kids to be creative while learning music. I became a teacher to share my passion and love of music by creating a safe and encouraging space for learning and performing. I wanted to encourage students to take risks and facilitate their artistic creativity.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I once had a student who refused to participate in a concert. His mother came to me after the concert and asked why her son was not in the concert. I told her he had refused. She then told me she was sick of him and I could have him. I was shocked. I looked at that little boy and I said “I wish I could have a son as smart and clever as him. I would love to take him home.” That young man emailed years later. He apologized and he thanked me for being so kind. We can always choose to care.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Well I’m not sure yet. I would probably use some of the money to pay off my student loans and purchase a big item for the school community. I would possibly try to get more music instruments and help the school PTA.
