Connect Tell us why you became a teacher

For as long as I can remember I have had a passion for teaching. In elementary school, I admired my teachers and aspired to be a teacher myself, so I could use the beloved overhead projector. Sadly, technology has since then advanced and while I never got to use a projector, I did find many other reasons why teaching is my passion. I have a heart for helping others and I found my niche in special education. These students need an advocate, a friend and someone to make learning make sense.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I have a special needs student who lost his little sister a few years ago. Since then he has struggled regulating his emotions and finding his way in school. I recently met with his mother who was beside herself that last school year he was cussing, crying and in the principal's office due to behavior, and this year he was THRIVING. In tears, she said she wanted him to complete another school year with me instead of moving to 7th grade, because he actually enjoys school and is learning.

What would you do with the $25,000?

As a teacher in today's world, my family lives paycheck to paycheck. On January 1st of this year, both my husband and I's vehicles were parked in our driveway and were totaled by a drunk driver. Our insurance covered the outstanding balance on our loans but left us without vehicles. We've been struggling to get ahead and this money would allow us do just that. I wish I could say I would use this for something extravagant but to me living simple and not worrying about paying bills is extravagant.
