Learn MoreI knew I wanted to be an educator because I wanted a career where I felt that I could make a difference in service to others. My mother and grandmother led this example in their nursing and behavioral health careers. I remember fondly the engaging and exciting atmosphere that my science educators provided in middle and high school which led to my passion for science today. I looked up to those educators and wanted to continue their legacy making science fun and engaging for future generations.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy most memorable teaching experience happened in 2021. My campus was under construction so a handful of classes were displaced at the community college across the street. Between this and the return from distance learning, engagement was difficult. I had one particular student who was disengaged, and had just returned from continuation school. But, when I got him outside for our Bubble Survivorship Curve Lab, he chased bubbles, laughed, and collected data. His engagement filled me with pride.
What would you do with the $25,000?While my current science facilities are satisfactory, I would invest in modern supplies, models, or technology such as an aquaponics system or an augmented reality sandbox to enhance my current Environmental Science or Marine Biology curriculum. With updated technology, my students will have the ability to participate in more rigorous and realistic laboratory experiments which will give them confidence and a competitive edge when applying to university.
