Eleni Maureas

I have been teaching for twenty four years. Every year the reason I look forward to teaching are my students by far and away!

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I love inspiring the students I interact with. Funny enough, I didn't want to teach. My mom was a public school teacher for 35 years and I saw how society treats teachers. In 2001 I entered the profession as a para professional. I was coming back to the work force after recovering from stage four Grave's Disease. In that year I experienced the profound influence I could have in the lives of my students. I had caught the teaching bug, got a job with Los Angeles Unified.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

How can I pick one, there are so many! Being away from my students during the pandemic was painful. One day in August 2020 I woke up with a play fully realized in my mind. I had never written a play before, I am the music teacher at my school. I took over the theater class, since my colleague had left due to COVID. We rehearsed and filmed all the scenes on Zoom. I entitled the play, "Keep the Faith" inspired by the Michael Jackson song. By the holidays we debuted the play on Zoom for everyone!

What would you do with the $25,000?

Honestly, I am more excited about the Hawaiian vacation. My in-laws went to Hawaii on their honeymoon. It is my bonus mom's (mother in law) dream to have a second honeymoon. This dream would only be made better if we could go with them as they have a very special bond with our son. My in laws are hard working people and they raised an amazing man in my husband. This year is a milestone anniversary for them. I would love to give something to them that we could all enjoy together.
