Tell us why you became a teacher

I chose to become a teacher to create a safe, inclusive environment where every student feels seen, valued, and empowered to grow. The most meaningful moments arise when we break through labels and stereotypes, working together to better ourselves. These instances highlight the unity and inclusivity we aim to cultivate in our classroom, showcasing how shared accomplishments can transcend cultural boundaries and celebrate the strength that diversity brings to our learning community.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience took place during COVID when a student’s mother tragically passed away. Despite the challenges faced by the low-income community I was teaching in, the collective response was nothing short of inspiring. The community came together to raise money, provide food, and offer other essential support to the family. It was a profound reminder of what schools do best: fostering a supportive and compassionate community that lifts each other up in times of need.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were to win the $25,000, I would use it to further my education and advance my mission in the field of education. As a first-generation, low-income Latino male, my experiences have deeply shaped my commitment to creating meaningful change. Growing up, I rarely saw teachers or administrators who looked like me, and that reality drives my passion to be a role model and advocate for my community. This funding would help me pursue my Ed.D and continue being a force for change.
