Tell us why you became a teacher

I didn't want to be a teacher to begin with. I had every intention on becoming a fine artist. While attending college I was invited to join an Art education course and instantly knew that the classroom is where I was meant to be. I was very close to a few of my former teachers and was fortunate enough to keep them as mentors through out the years. My "kids" will always be my kids. After 28 years teaching art education I have students across the the United States and the world sharing their joy.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

At first thought, my most memorable teaching experience was when a young boy got his head stuck in a chair and the fire department had to cut him out. The most meaningful experiences are after my students leave to make their way in world. So many of them still regularly check in with me. 28 years of students and it is still joyful to receive a text, a call, an letter, a photo, but the best is when the stop in for a visit. Those hugs are the best. That is what tells me I made a difference.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I first would set up a mini-grant for my graduating seniors planning to follow the art path. Second, I would love to purchase new desks and stools for my classroom. Third, I would love to throw a little summer soirée and invite as many of my past students as possible to join me.
