Tell us why you became a teacher

My path didn't begin in education, but rather in nursing school. I spent 2.5 years, thinking this would be my career. Not long into my schooling, I became overwhelmed with anxieties and the pressures of being in a hospital. I knew I needed a change and pivoted to education. I found that I could excel in education and help others. My first experience in a classroom during undergrad, felt like home. I understood this is where I wanted to make a difference and channel my passions.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I had a first grade student who was unable to read. He also exhibited difficult behaviors like running across tables and kicking supplies. This student was Native American and had mentioned that he went to Pow Wows with his dad. I found some books that talked about Pow Wows and gave them to him. Although he might not have been able to read them, he took great interest in them and always kept them with him. After this, his behaviors drastically decreased and our relationship flourished.

What would you do with the $25,000?

With $25,000 I would use the majority to pay off medical debt. My son has had many hospital stays between an injury to a tooth, RSV, and a twice broken leg. I am also expecting my second child and would love to put the money towards a second delivery and second daycare fee. Additionally, I would love to be able provide more flexible seating options for my classroom as well as continue to build a diverse classroom library.
