I became a teacher because I grew up in a single parent household where education was not a priority. Teachers were my lifeline for help, coaching and role models. My mom, who is a first generation immigrant to the US, is illiterate and had a difficult time with helping us children with schoolwork. It became my priority and life goal to be not only our first college graduate but also an inspiration to today’s youth. A teacher that they could connect with and use an example.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceI am a Middle School Math teacher. By the time students enter middle school, they have convinced themselves they’re either great or not a capable math student. One time in class while working on a lesson, I saw a student’s face light up! Her response was, “ I finally get it. I CAN learn math. Mrs. Wiley, now I believe you!”
What would you do with the $25,000?My husband recently retired from the US Army after a 28 year career. I would use part of the money with helping with this transition to his next job. I would also use part of the money to buy some flexible seating options for my students within my classroom.
