Tell us why you became a teacher

There were many factors that influenced me to become a teacher. I’ve always loved being around children. My summers were spent babysitting and working in a daycare center. The biggest influence I had in becoming a teacher was my dad. He left teaching when I was young to pursue farming full time, I grew up hearing stories about his fifth and sixth graders. I wanted a career that would make me smile and where I could make a difference.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In my 26 plus years teaching, there have been memorable moments. One of my favorite memories is when I set up an oil spill scenario for teams of students to clean up, so they could see first hand, some of the challenges environmentalists, scientists, marine biologists, and others face when these disasters occur. The group that collected the most oil, had a clear goal and plan.

What would you do with the $25,000?

My husband and I enjoy traveling, but we rarely have time or money. We’d probably start planning some vacations for after retirement. We’d like to visit some of the National Parks as well as cruise. I’d also like to hire a house cleaner/organizer to help me catch up at home.
