I was heavily influenced by my own art teachers. I always liked art but when I had it in middle school, a whole creative outlet flourished in me through Mrs Levstik. She made it fun and interesting. Later, in high school, it was my photography teacher Mr. Briddick and Ms. Janet Roller-Schmidt who instilled a confidence in me and my artwork. Both were influential in me wanting to do the same thing when I pursued my teaching degree.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience centered around a Ceramics student that often fell behind in class. She was having a tough time at home and I think she enjoyed being in my room as a safe haven. We often talked about what she was going through and I counseled her and shared my own experiences. At the end of the year, she wrote me a beautiful letter about how much she appreciated me and how I made her feel seen. That is the ultimate compliment when you know you impacted someone.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’d donate a portion to our chapter of the National Art Honor Society that I founded at our school a year ago. We have dreams to build a sculpture garden in our courtyard and this money would help that come true. I’d also work on building my own ceramics studio at home and dedicate some of it towards taking more classes for me.
