Tell us why you became a teacher

Initially, I became a teacher because of my love of history. The subject has always fascinated me and I wanted to share my enthusiasm with kids. I’m also a big believer that those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it and wanted to instill that lesson in the next generation. But, since my first day on the job it has always been all about the kids. Building relationships and helping them grow has been the honor of my life. I would teach any subject if it meant I could work with them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I’m fortunate enough to have this experience every year. For years, I have chaperoned the annual 8th grade trip to D.C., and I have organized the trip for the last 4. For many kids this is their first time away from home for more than a night and it is so rewarding to see them grow and mature before your eyes. They also get to form a bond with our nations capital, seeing the physical representations of the civics ideas they learn about in class. This is so vital in our current political climate

What would you do with the $25,000?

Being a teacher is not for those who plan on being rich. We all know that going into it. I grew up in the town that I teach in, and I love being part of an incredible community. Unfortunately, as a Boston suburb, the housing market within a 15 mile radius of my school has become simply unaffordable for someone on a teachers salary. If I got this money, I would put it towards a down payment on a house for my growing family of my wife, dog, and son who is due this June.
