Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I saw a need in education for people who were truly passionate about the job, and willing to do whatever it takes to better their students lives. I’ve always worked in low income areas where a lot of kids don’t have a positive role model at home. For many kids I get to be that role model for those who may not have one at home. Especially being the PE teacher, because I get to lead them and see them grow and from kindergarteners all the way through mature 5th graders.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I was teaching a jump rope unit with a first grade class. During the lesson I was teaching kids how to turn the rope. One kid in particular was just having a hard time getting it. I worked with him for a few minutes one on one, and eventually he got his first jump. His eyes lit up so big. For the rest of the lesson, each time I passed by him, he would say "watch this coach!" as he would get two then three turns. That inspired me to create a book of inspirational/funny quotes made by kids in P.E.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would purchase a Ninja Obstacle Course for my school and my school district. I have several P.E. colleagues who would definitely use it if I were to buy one. Secondarily, I would use it to further my education and get my Administration degree. My district has a program with the local University to expedite existing teachers through an Admin program while still teaching. I would put some into a school savings for equipment, and put the rest away for a rainy day for my family.
