Tell us why you became a teacher

My path into education began in law enforcement, where I saw the impact of lost educational opportunities. This fueled my passion for teaching. During high school, I was inspired by Coach Carter, my Psych 101 teacher, who treated every student with positive and supportive energy. He made you want to work harder and be a better person. I strive to make learning engaging and meaningful, especially for underserved students, and to create a classroom where every student feels valued and inspired.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

We did the "Naked Egg" Experiment during my first year teaching Life Science on an ELL team. I am not bilingual and neither were my students. When it came to communication, we had to get creative. Hands-on demonstrations helped. After going through each step of the experiment which takes days, I let the students explode the eggs like color-filled water balloons. I was recording the masterpiece when after the final egg popped, one of my students exclaimed, "Miss! It looks like (a) plant cell!"

What would you do with the $25,000?

I already spend a lot of money out of pocket on my students and classroom. I do not doubt that this would continue to factor in if I won the $25,000. There is so much my students could use to help make Math more engaging and to help differentiate learning as every person is unique in how they learn best. I would also relieve some personal stress by paying down debts such as student loans. I would also like to take my partner of eleven years on a real vacation, rather than our normal staycations.
