Tell us why you became a teacher

I have wanted to be a teacher since I was in third grade. I looked up to my teachers because they were so kind and caring. They were great examples for me. Of course, I also had a few not-so-great teachers. They made me want to be one of the great ones I had had for other students. Also, I just love watching students learn and grow and getting to know them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I once taught at a very small school that only had 40 students in Pre-K through 8th grade. I taught a 1st and 2nd grade combined class, but also had preschool, Kindergarten, third, and fourth grade students at various parts of the day. It was such a joy to watch the students grow up. Even after I moved away, I came back for the graduation of my first class. The end end of my last year there, all of the parents in the school chipped in to give me a generous gift. It was so special.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I am currently working on a doctorate in reading and literacy. I don't want my doctorate to leave the classroom, but rather to become better in it. The money would help me pay for my studies so that I can continue to help students learn and grow.
