Tell us why you became a teacher

My third grade teacher inspired me to become a teacher. She made me feel welcome, safe, and loved. She did “the voices” when she read aloud to us and she made me laugh daily. She taught about empathy and made sure everyone felt included and supported. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, but she solidified my dream. Every student deserves to have a teacher like her, and that’s what I strive to be for my students.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My favorite teaching experience was when I tricked my students with a “life skills/math” lesson. I had students “shop” for books they’d like to read, on the Scholastic website. They were told they had $25 to spend on any books they wanted. Each student completed a wish list and tallied their total. What they didn’t know was I was planning to purchase the books for them for Christmas, using money donated from friends, family, and community members. I will never forget the looks on their faces.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’d like to pay down some of my student loan debt and put some money aside for my own children’s education. I’d also love to revamp and update my classroom library and purchase resources for my students. I’d also like to do something nice for the staff who work at my school. They’re amazing and I appreciate being able to work with them.
