I became a teacher because of the teachers I had during in middle and high school. I came from a poor community and was a product of a single parent home. My teachers saw something in me that ignited a fire in me both academically and athletically. They would always tell me to never dim my light just to let others shine. They pushed me to be the best. They made learning fun. I told myself if I ever get the opportunity to make a positive impact on young people I would take full advantage of it.

My most memorable teaching moment is when I won Teacher of the Year at my school. To be nominated by not only my peers but the student body as well is truly an honor. It wasn't so much about the accolade itself, it was the reminder of my "why" which are the students and their "ah ha" moments. It was getting my students to love reading and writing. It was the daily reminder of why this is my passion and as cliché as it may sound, I would do it for free.

To be totally honest, it's no secret teachers are underpaid. So I would use some of the money to catch up on some bills. I would also, and although it may be hard, I would treat myself to a solo trip to a tropical island. I say it would be hard because I always think of others before I think of myself. I want others to smile and if I can put a smile on someone face, I feel so good inside. I would most definitely use some of the money to decorate my classroom. Yeah, I could use this money.
