I love teaching because kids’ excitement during STEM projects lights up the room and makes learning joyful and meaningful.

Learn MoreI became a teacher because I discovered, while working at a childcare facility, that I had a natural talent for working with kids. I could create excitement and spark curiosity in learning, and I loved seeing their faces light up when they explored new ideas. That experience showed me the power of teaching and the joy of inspiring young minds. I realized I wanted a career where I could make a difference, be a champion for kids, and help them believe in themselves and their potential.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceMy most memorable teaching experience was the day a student impacted me deeply. While teaching Gifted & Talented classes to 100 students weekly, one student gazed off and said, “Mrs. Skaggs, it’s not fair.” When I asked why, they replied, “It’s not fair that all kids don’t get to do these activities.” Those words weighed on my heart. I began thinking of ways to reach more students. When the district-wide STEM position opened, I jumped at the chance to make STEM opportunities accessible to all.
What would you do with the $25,000?If I won the $25,000, I would use it to create a fab lab at my school. This lab would provide students with access to cutting-edge technology and tools, such as 3D printers, robotics kits, and coding equipment. In my rural community, resources like these are limited, and I want to ensure all students have equal opportunities to explore STEM and develop critical skills for their futures. This fab lab would inspire innovation, creativity, and hands-on learning for all students.
