Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a high school teacher to provide inner city youth with a safe space and to remind them that somebody loves and cares about them. Being a teacher means setting children up for success. I noticed in my community that a lot of the youth were graduating and didn't have a plan or were not even graduating. I love to remind my students that this world is theirs and to speak life into their dreams. I am constantly fulfilling my life goal, which is to mean something and make a difference.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was with a senior who believed his only option was the military. This young man gave up on the idea of going to college especially because he didn't have a scholarship. I was able to convince him to apply to some colleges and he is now going to Savannah State Uni. on a football scholarship. I will never forget how estatic he was to come tell me I did that for him. I made a difference with him and he told me that it changed his life.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I was awarded the $25,000 I would use it to kick start my after school program. I want to create an after school program to help keep the youth out of the streets and from getting into trouble. Children no longer have free safe spaces to gather after school. I would provide tutors, games, meals and this would all be free for those in the community. If I can save the youth from jail or dying, I will do my best to do so.
