Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because when I was in school I always coasted among the middle — never bad, but never great — and I always felt overlooked. I made it my mission when I decided to become a teacher to make sure students never felt like I did.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I began teaching a unit for argument using a true crime podcast — the students became detectives and lawyers looking for evidence to decide if the conviction was right or wrong. I had never seen my students so engaged, involved, and excited about something. I still to this day, 6 years later, still get messages from former students in regards to the podcast as it has often been in the news. It always brings so much joy to my heart.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to help pay off some student loans, and then save some to help start a nice fund for my future son. I recently found out I’m expecting, and it’s been a very anxious time thinking about needing to take time away from the classroom so that I can deliver and care for my son. This would be such a huge load off of my shoulders in so many ways.
