Tell us why you became a teacher

The disability rights movement is heard through the voices of those who are denied the right of choice: choice of independence; of housing; of employment; and until recent decades, choice of education. All too often, people with disabilities are seen in a pitying, rather than empowering, perspective. It is in education that their human rights have begun to be respected, and it is through education that people with disabilities will ultimately obtain their right of choice in every domain of life.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience was my first time working as a co-teacher in a full inclusion classroom. Discrimination is a learned practice. Children are not born to hold grudges or to dislike certain types of people; they are taught these values. The time, then, to start teaching true respect and equality is from birth, when education begins. Having the opportunity to witness genuine connection, love, and friendship is meaningful and impactful, and I am lucky to experience it.

What would you do with the $25,000?

It would be an honor and privilege to win $25,000. If I was given this money, I would contribute some of it to support outreach programs for families of students with disabilities. In my career, I have seen many inequities in how families are provided support and basic information about their own rights when advocating for their children. Equity in special education is something I will never stop working towards. I would probably save the rest! Thanks you for considering me!
