Tell us why you became a teacher

After graduating with a biochemistry degree and passing the MCAT, I decided I didn’t want to be a pediatric surgeon. I didn’t want to stay at my credit union job, so my mom suggested applying at her school. At first, I was hesitant, due to all the negativity surrounding teaching and the lack of pay. But I wasn’t happy so I took the pay cut and applied. 8 years later I have been a paraprofessional for two years and now I’m my 6th year teaching. I wouldn’t change my path for anything!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I met a kindergartner last year who was cute as can be, but had trouble regulating and speech limitations. Their teacher last year had so much a hard time getting them to do the simplest of tasks without a meltdown. Well, that student was placed on my roster for this school year. We have worked hard creating a trusting relationship, consistency, and routine. I can proudly say, this child can read, join in conversations, and advocate for himself and his feelings. The growth is astonishing!

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use this money to pay off my student loans. I am fixing to start my masters in administration, curriculum and supervision so this will help me begin with a clean slate! Anything left over I will use to add additional flexible seating arrangements for my classroom. I recently made the switch and have seen an increase in student focus and productivity!
