Tell us why you became a teacher

I started coaching youth baseball when I took over my little brother’s team when I was in high school. I found that I aimed a sense of pride in teaching those young kids something new and watching them learn and grow. When I went to college I found that I always loved my History classes. Teaching seem liked a great combination of the two.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Leading my class in building a peer teaching program involving environmental education, where my high school students facilitated hands on outdoor learning to visiting elementary students. This program involving my little school of 80 students and starting with one visiting school grew into a program with up to 600 visiting students over the course of a year. Our program went on to be chosen as a winner of the SeaWorld/Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Award.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Host a school celebratory picnic reception celebrating all of my students contributions over the years which helped make me the teacher I became. With the rest of it, I would pay off my daughter’s college loans.
