Tell us why you became a teacher

I became an educator because of my passion for helping others and my love for science. I wanted a purpose that combined both, and teaching became that path. For 26 years, I have empowered students to think critically, believe in themselves, and break barriers. Education provides economic power regardless of background, and I wanted to give that opportunity to others. Teaching is my way of giving back, inspiring, and shaping future generations while sharing my love for science.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

In 2009, I helped my school network begin participating in regional and state science fairs. I remember a student deeply passionate about her project that took her to state. Watching her embrace discovery, questioning what she was told, and seeking answers on her own was incredibly rewarding. Winning wasn't the goal, sparking curiosity was. Science fairs teach students to ask, "How do you know what you know?" Watching them think critically and take pride in their work was truly fulfilling.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I’d invest the money into spaces that support my students’ emotional well-being. Nature was my escape growing up, a place to relax and heal from challenges at home. I want to give my students the same opportunity. I’ve helped create a space around our school and now we are working on another, a trail behind the gym where the funds will go to completing this project after flooding setbacks. I would also use some for student transportation to state science fair.
