When I get this question my first thought is, I don’t know, I just knew I liked helping people & the biggest way I could do that was through art or music as a teacher. I had a lot of opportunities to be a leader in HS band where I supported my peers as musicians & people in working towards our performances but also helped others when they were dealing with personal things. I found a lot of joy through these experiences & it felt like something I wanted to continue doing as a teacher.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceOutside of when a student tells me they still play their instrument after graduation, was when I was subbing while trying to find a job. I subbed for 4th grd band lesson where I gave a trombone player tips to get better. About a month later I subbed for the same teacher & that student said”, I’ve been working on what you told me!” I forgot what I told them, but realized how such a small teaching moment for me was huge for this one student. Those small moments are what’s so important.
What would you do with the $25,000?My first instinct is to get some adaptive/accessible instrument options for our students with disabilities in my school! When thinking of myself, which doesn’t happen as often, that this will help with those 6 digit student loans, as well as taking care of things needed at home for my wife & I. Lastly, something I have been wanting to do the past 13 yrs is to run the Loch Ness Marathon, & this could also help give me a chance to finally do that without hesitation.
