I love teaching because I want students to recognize that success is not purely academic, but rather about growth & doing the right thing!

Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher originally because I had amazing teachers who helped me grow into who I am and I wanted to pass that along. I continue to be a teacher because it helps me be the best person I can be. My anxiety caused me to be a problem-avoider as a teen and made it so I struggled with social situations. I have learned that teaching is full of constant unexpected social situations and that I have to learn to face challenges head-on and to navigate imperfections while doing the best I can.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

Bringing a team full of gifted teenagers across the country for Quiz Bowl Nationals. Another teacher, my wife, and I were in charge of a group of 13 brilliant neurodiverse kids. For some, it was their first time out of Colorado. Seeing how the kids grew as people coexisting away from their parents and support systems was incredible, and the 16 of us left feeling like we were a family of our own. By the end of the weekend, it did not matter that we only won one round – we had each other.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would start with the obvious – paying off the debts. My wife and I could treat ourselves to some new skiing equipment as well. However, I would want most of it to go into savings. In my adult life, I have learned that one of the things I am aiming for is the ability to do what feels right in the moment. My wife and I love having experiences and doing things, and a nicely padded savings account would expand this freedom even futher. There are so many more opportunities we could say "yes" to!
