Tell us why you became a teacher

Growing up I admired my sister and wanted to be just like her. Watching her every move I started to notice she struggled to connect with learning. As I got older my sister would tell me that she was dumb and she couldn't learn. I started to unpack what she was feeling. I knew I wanted to be a teacher who gives students the space to share their voice and different opportunities to enhance their brilliance. When a student is wowed by their brilliance, I know I made the right choice.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable moment was when my scholars planned & conducted an experiment. We were learning about light and its interaction with objects, curiosity amongst the students was at its peak. I knew I had to make time for an experiment. What made it memorable was that all of my students were using inquiry to develop 6 testable questions, they worked with classmates with all different strengths, and the joy that was illuminating from our classroom will be held in my heart for years to come.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Everyday my car is filled with backpacks and instruments as I drive my daughter and nephew to school. On other days I can be found driving families who need rides to school or school events. The last few years my 2011 car has had error lights, flat tires, and windows that don't always work. Car issues have made me reluctant to offer rides due to safety concerns while still feeling anxious for my own family. The money would allow me to get a new car that gets everyone to and from school safely.
