Tell us why you became a teacher

I was always amazed by my mother’s love for teaching and wanted to be just like her. I was also inspired by my elementary music teacher, Mrs.Moreland. I became a teacher to make my students feel safe and loved. I didn’t always feel like I belonged, but I felt empowered by my teachers to be myself and stand out. I want to help my students feel safe to stand out and be themselves!

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experiences are the ones where I get to see the most growth for my students. I had one student that started third grade with minimal writing and reading skills, scoring in the 1th percentile. Helping him grow and work hard and get to the 15th percentile, where he was writing paragraphs and feeling confident in his skills was my favorite part of that school year. I also love to see my students use their interpersonal skills that we work on together out on their own.

What would you do with the $25,000?

It’s safe to say that my classroom would get a makeover. I teach in a title one school, and I would work to provide grocery gift cards for my families and new winter coats. For most of the school supplies in my classroom, I pay out of pocket. It would be such a blessing to stock up and help my coworkers to do the same. I never take a donation without offering as much as I can!!
