It is vastly entertaining - and hilarious when students hail me in public spaces as if spotting a rare bird: “look! It’s Miss M!”

Doesn’t every child idolize their teachers? I sure did! But I needed corporate salaries to raise my 3 children on my own. Once they were grown and flown, I moved away from the Chicago winters - then spotted a call for teachers and substitutes in the local newspaper. I went from “I’ll give it a try” to receiving a grant for a special accelerated course of graduate study - and my teaching license in Secondary Education. At age 67. My own children are proud of me, and so are my students!
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experienceIt is tough to be a teenager in America today; I try to make it easier. Several similar incidents are rolled into one: big tough cool “jocks” will sidle up to me, offhandedly start a conversation, then hang on every word. For example “were there really death camps just outside of towns like ours?” or “how can anyone not believe in Jesus?” I stay relaxed, matching their casual tone, while asking questions that lead them to their own answers … as their friends pretend not to eavesdrop.
What would you do with the $25,000?Fund a snack pantry in the high school: difficult to learn when you are hungry!
