Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because it has always been my dream since I was a little girl. Growing up, I didn’t see teachers who looked like me, which fueled my desire to become an educator even more. I never had a Black teacher from kindergarten through college. I believe that students should have the opportunity to learn from teachers of all backgrounds and ethnicities, as this diversity helps create a rich learning environment for everyone. I've gained invaluable knowledge and experience.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience occurred while I was teaching 8th grade during a difficult divorce. Although my students were unaware of my struggles, they were some of the best and sweetest students I could have asked for. I felt their love and support, and together we built strong connections while learning a great deal. I strive to create a learning community in my classroom, and that year it truly worked; my students made significant gains in their academic performance.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would use the $25,000 to help fund my nonprofit organization, The College and Career Club (CCC). My goal is to coach and advise diverse, low-income students from both traditional and nontraditional backgrounds on their pathways, whether it be pursuing a career or attending college. I would assist them with college essays, scholarships, job applications, interviewing skills, financial aid, resumes, and more. I am passionate about guiding students on their journey to achieve their goals.
