Growing up, I never saw a teacher that looked like me or understood me as a gifted, talented, and brown girl. I’ve always taught or tutored others: my siblings, cousins, friends, dolls… It is only natural that I would become a nurturing teacher who cares for ALL children and desires to see them grow and thrive. I teach to give my students what I longed for as a child: a teacher who cares and “gets” them.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience came from a very shy young lady who rarely spoke up in class. Nor asked questions, but I noticed that she struggled in math and reading comprehension. In small groups, we continued to work on understanding word problems and analyzing prompts. Our hard work paid off! Her mother came to visit and told me that her child had never made honor roll or had straight As before that school year. Building her confidence helped a struggling student find her way.

What would you do with the $25,000?

Wow! A gift of $25,000 would allow me to contribute to my child’s college fund. I’d also like to start a nonprofit organization to support children in need during this time of unforeseen circumstances within the education system as funding is being jeopardized.
