Tell us why you became a teacher

As a child of two immigrant parents, I feel like I’ve been in the role of teacher for most of my life. Not only did I often translate for my parents, as the oldest, I was also responsible for helping my siblings with homework. I loved being a helper and my identity soon became synonymous with that. I gained so much through helping others. My 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Diesner, is the person who really inspired me to pursue teaching. She is my role model for becoming the teacher I am today.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience has to be my first few years as a second grade teacher in an inner city school in San Jose. CA. I worked day and night to create developmentally appropriate material for my class who for the majority were second language learners. Many of my students did not get learning support at home and struggled academically while also facing the challenge of poverty. I am proud that I was able to help so many kids and gained trust with my families.

What would you do with the $25,000?

25,000 would be such a blessing for me and my family. I am married with three children and both of my daughters struggle with debilitating health issues. I would use the money to pay down medical bills that we have accrued over the last few years. The money would also help my own children with finishing college. It would be an unbelievable privilege to win this amazing prize!
