Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher because I struggled as an English language learner, but there were teachers who believed in me and made school so enjoyable through drama, play and art. I'd like to create learning opportunities for them to shine using their gifts. Currently as a Spanish teacher, I am creating the opportunity for students to learn a second language. I believe that by them learning more than one language, they can have respect towards people and build bridges with other ethnic groups.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

A couple years ago, I taught bilingual students about Safari animals and taught them about what the life of a zoologist might be. Many of them were at a low grade reading level. I had the lessons come to life by exploring the life of Jane Goodall and had them dress life zoologists and as if we were going on a Safari. The ones that were unmotivated got excited to learn and their reading skills improved.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If I were to receive this amount, I would support the academy with with sensory play and new learning materials in the areas of Spanish and STEM. Second, I would use part of it as a down payment for my first home . Lastly I would start a neighborhood garden and form a community using our gifts and knowledge.
