Tell us why you became a teacher

As a young girl I played “teacher” with my friends and in school began helping others, especially with math. Helping others succeed and reach their potential is not only gratifying, but has led to personal growth and fulfillment. Being a kid at heart keeps me connected to my students on a personal level that in turn helps motivate them in my classroom. If I am able to spark one student’s interest in school or my classroom, then I feel accomplished.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I enjoy being a teacher to ignite hope in children that feel they are not loved or cared about. The struggling and hard-to-reach students are whom I try to especially make connections to find success. One such student told me school was difficult for them because of their family background. I explained how I was the first in my family to go to college and my dad had been a high school drop out. The student began working harder in my classroom and even volunteered during discussions.

What would you do with the $25,000?

I would take my husband on a trip. We were high school sweethearts and have been married for 26 years yet still have not taken a honeymoon. Between my teaching from August to May, coaching cross country from June through October, Track February through May, his job, and finding time for our two daughters, there is not much time left for us.
