Tell us why you became a teacher

I became a teacher to support my community and help students who look like me and share similar backgrounds. As a Latina from a low-income community, I saw how marginalized students often lacked opportunities. I wanted to break barriers and show them what’s possible. Teaching is a journey of many challenges and successes. But, one thing remains constant through it all: the unwavering belief that every student has the potential to succeed, and it’s my privilege to help them realize it.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

My most memorable teaching experience has been watching my students transform from hesitant freshmen to confident seniors. In their freshman year, they resisted community circles and sharing their feelings. Through consistent encouragement and creating a safe space, I saw them grow into individuals eager to connect and support each other. Hearing, “Ms., I want to see if others feel the same way I do,” was a pivotal moment. It’s been an honor to guide them from 9th to 12th grade.

What would you do with the $25,000?

If awarded $25,000, I would first pay off my student loans from my bachelor’s and master’s programs. Once that debt is cleared, I would apply to a doctorate program focused on educational leadership and research on how to better support students with disabilities. This opportunity would allow me to deepen my understanding and enhance my ability to create impactful, inclusive educational practices for all learners.
