Tell us why you became a teacher

After graduating with a degree in exercise physiology, I worked in cardiac rehab at Gottlieb Hospital near Chicago. I loved helping patients recover, but after one of my favorite patients died suddenly, I was deeply shaken. While cleaning my mom's garage to distract myself, I found a time capsule I made at 10. Inside was a letter where I hoped I’d be a teacher. That moment sparked my career change to pursue physical education. Now, I’m grateful to teach students how to make healthier choices.

Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

One of my most memorable teaching experiences was a “Biology Room Break-in” mystery I created for my EL classes on Halloween. I staged a “break-in,” made a mess, and had students use evidence to solve the case. We were learning about omnivores, carnivores, and herbivores, and the correct answer revealed a code to open a lockbox full of candy. I incorporated photos, audio, and written reports for language practice, and students had to collaborate to figure out the code. They still talk about it!

What would you do with the $25,000?

After taxes, my husband and I would likely pay off our HVAC system first, but we'd also treat ourselves—maybe with a trip or a hot tub. We both work hard, so I’d love to spoil us a bit. I’d also invest in our school’s athletics, particularly my flag football program. It’s been amazing watching it grow, and as head coach, I want all students, regardless of income, to have access to sports. I often fund cleats and opportunities myself and would love to eliminate barriers for my students.
